Solving a significant disability sector issue – The Hearth Home Solution

Justin Scanlon

From inception, Hearth has been committed to finding solutions to challenges faced by families and loved ones living with disability.

For some years now, we have been working on resolving the challenge of finding the right home, which delivers not just independence but a place they call their home.

Our solution is to ensure that participants are part of the whole experience of finding and setting up a comfortable home. Why?

The NDIS identified that approximately 40,000 Australians with disability require specialised housing response with 24/7 support.

Yet only 15,000 people of the 40,000 are provided homes in the government regulated and funded Specialist Disability Accommodation (SDA) program.

Another 25,000 have 24/7 support funding – known as Supported Independent Living (SIL), but no house to live independently in.

Among the main challenges are the prerequisites for SIL – including the requirement (for many) that families and guardians find two suitable housemates and a suitable home for all three housemates – with a one-year lease. Importantly, and there is a requirement that supports for all three housemates are coordinated and shared.

This is the challenge that the Hearth Home Solution is addressing. The way we work involves matching housemates first – ensuring the funding lines up. We then work with the families to purchase a long-term house.

We know that the homes we have set up already are making a difference. We will continue this important path because we know it matters.
