The transition process – NDIS home and living support can be a challenging consideration for participants living with a disability and their family

Justin Scanlon

Thinking about NDIS Supported Independent Living (SIL) for a loved one is never easy – especially at the very beginning. As a parent of a person with a complex disability I get it.

By the time participants might be ready to move out of home, families have experienced a lot. Ensuring safety, minimising discomfort, and providing necessities and essentials requires devoted effort and much learning.

While paid support may have provided some relief for families and guardians, living life permanently on the clock often takes its toll over time.

It is one of the many aspects of providing care that can cause trauma and long-term stress.

Families who have received NDIS support to look after their loved one for a most of their loved one’s life may be better able to reconcile with their son or daughter being permanently supported out of home.

Time will tell.

But there are many older carers and parents who have not had reasonable and necessary support pre-NDIS. They have had to devote a very large proportion of their lives actively supporting their loved one.

The introduction of the NDIS and availability of government funded support workers provided much needed relief for families and guardians.

But at Hearth, we have found that it can be particularly hard for guardians in these situations, when the time comes for their loved ones to transition into alternative accommodation outside the family home.

Every person living with a disability participant is unique. So, we know that every family situation will be different.

But we will always be prepared to do is work diligently with families through transition – because we know the challenges of reconciling many things is very real, and cannot be underestimated.

Janice, whose son Jonathan lives in a home set up by Hearth, describes the impact of transition.
