Hearth’s Senior Speech Pathologist Joanne Whiteoak presents Dysphagia Workshop

We were thrilled by the response to our Dysphagia Workshop conducted by Joanne Whiteoak Hearth Allied Health Senior Speech Pathologist.

The response from all participants has been overwhelmingly positive! Participants described the event as “very informative and easily understood.”

This event is part of a Hearth series designed to educate, inform, and or professionally develop interested parties in the field of Dysphagia.

Joanne Whiteoak addressed the following at the Dysphagia Workshop

In this presentation, Joanne Whiteoak delivered a session that addressed the following learning objectives.

Learning Objectives:
  1. Gain an overview of general anatomy and physiology of swallowing
  2. To identify the common causes and conditions associated with Dysphagia
  3. Recognise the signs and symptoms of swallowing difficulties
  4. Understand the role of the Speech Pathologist and other medical / allied health professionals and get an overview of Speech Pathology assessment, treatment, and recommendations in dysphagia management.
  5. To better understand diet and fluid modification definitions using the IDDSI framework
  6. To understand your roles and responsibilities
  7. Recognise the importance of following a Mealtime management plan
  8. Understand individual choice and control in the context of dysphagia management. Consideration of quality of life and risk feeding.
  9. Know where to go for more information / useful links / resources

Presenter Senior Speech Pathologist Joanne Whiteoak

Joanne is a highly experienced Speech Pathologist having worked in Australia and the United Kingdom for over 28 years.

This has included work in private and public acute and rehabilitation facilities in Australia, such as Alfred Health, Epworth HealthcareMonash HealthMelbourne Health, and Western Health. In the UK she has worked at HCA Healthcare and a range of public NHS hospitals. Joanne’s roles have been diverse and in addition to several Senior clinical Speech Pathology positions she has worked as a Speech Pathology department Manager, presented at workshops and lectures on Brain injury in Malaysia and participated in research into the use of productive communication strategies for people post traumatic brain injury.

Joanne has extensive skills working with adults with acquired speech, language, cognitive, voice and swallowing difficulties. She is committed to the provision of client centred and compassionate support for our NDIS participants to ensure assessment and therapy is tailored to an individual’s needs and can assist them to meet their life participation goals.
